After performing some brief maintenance, I settled into the red leather interior on the driver's side and turned the key. The old Camaro roared to life in an instant. The radio turned on as well, still set to big brother's favorite station. I turned the volume down, and pulled out of Dad's garage, heading out into the black of night. Not a moon or star to be seen.

After a few turns, I approached the main stretch of my travels, and a chill ran down my spine. My brother died on this road 22 years ago. His car survived with minimal damage, but he did not. In the decades that followed his death, that same highway would claim the lives of dozens more, garnering nationwide infamy in the process. Disturbingly, the victims usually died in a manner similar to his, battered and bloody, but without a clear reason regarding why. Most held a good driver's record inconsistent with the accident responsible for their untimely demise.

My brother was one such driver. His death has forever scarred my parents and I. His beloved '92 Camaro was all that remained of him, and so it sat in the family's two car garage like a holy relic of a past saint.

Tonight is the anniversary of his passing. I will return his car to the site of the accident and pay my respect to him as I reflect upon that day.

That is, unless the Highway of Blood has other plans in store for me...
